I'd say Scott D. is right on this one. Just due to the fact that an enclosed cockpit increases the hearing capacity of the driver.

Any other guesses?

I remember seeing a video of a team trying it out in the 60s or early 70s, but I don't remember what team.

Do you consider 'crew' a riding mechanic??

Maybe the driver and a riding mechanic, had radios to talk with each other???

wait...title says Boat shore. rules that out.

Kirk JC here. I thought of you last week getting the answer.

OK Here it is......... 1965 Tahoe Miss and Chuck Thompson were the first Unlimited to run with a shore to boat and boat to shore radio communication sysytem.
